In this one week course offered through Outschol we will take a dive into each of the five major branches of Earth Science: Meteorology, Astronomy, Geology, Oceanography, and Environmental Science. Students will learn about storm creation, the night sky, the rock cycle, our seas, and our natural resources.
Day 1 - Meteorology - Storm Watch: All students will explore the adventures of weather by learning about different weather instruments. Learn how clouds form and the weather they predict, watch a tornado spin, and make a tornado in a bottle. We will also track a hurricane by plotting latitude and longitude, wind speed and direction, and predicting the pattern of the storm.
Day 2 - Astronomy - Starlab: Students explore the night sky and learn to recognize and name constellations as well as other observable phenomenon. The educator will relay Greek, Roman, and Native American stories as they relate to the constellations.
Day 3 - Geology - Rock Cycle: Students explore the amazing geological phenomena of the rock cycle. Participants hypothesize and conduct experiments examining the effects of earthquakes, erosion, volcanoes, plate tectonics and weather.
Day 4 - Oceanography - Exploring our Seas: Discover the diverse physical properties of the sea floor. Experiment with salt water density and learn about ocean marine life.
Day 5 - Natural Resources: Learn about our natural resources and how recycling and reusing materials can help preserve them. Together we will build a simple bird feeder you can use to observe birds who are excellent pollinators and seed disbursers in your outdoor space.
