Our online homeschool programs are a month by month subscription. Each month, a materials kit will be mailed to your home and will include some simple household materials your student will need for the class experiments. The weekly class schedule for September is below. Class will be every Tuesday (except September 1).
Week 1 - Crime Scene Investigators: Search the scene for clues, analyze your findings, and interpret the evidence to identify a suspect.
NGSS Learning Standards: 5-PS1-3; MS-PS1-8
Week 2 - Rock Cycle: Students, working in groups, explore the amazing geological phenomena of the rock cycle. Participants hypothesize and conduct experiments examining the effects of earthquakes, erosion, volcanoes, plate tectonics and weather.
NGSS Learning Standards: 2-ESS1-1; 4-ESS1-1, 4-ESS2-1, 4-ESS2-2, 4-ESS3-2; 5-ESS2-1; MS-ESS2-3, MS-ESS2-1, MS-ESS3-1
Week 3 - Chemistry Detective: Students perform qualitative tests on common household powders, and on a “mystery” powder. They use analytical thinking and deductive reasoning to solve the identity of the unknown substance. Concrete ideas about atoms and molecules are formulated as students participate in this challenging program.
NGSS Learning Standards: 5-PS1-1, 5-PS1-2, 5-PS1-3, 5-PS1-4; MS-PS1-1, MS-PS1-4, MS-PS1-8, MS-PS1-2, MS-PS1-5
Week 4 - Water Ecology: Using water samples, students assess water quality and discuss the negative effect of various environmental factors on the water. Students learn about the plants and animals that make up a river environment and their interdependence. Students design food chains and food webs for greater clarity and understanding of this delicate ecosystem.
NGSS Learning Standards: P-LS1-1, P-LS1-2; K-LS1-1, K-ESS3-1, 2-LS2-2, 2-LS4-1; 3-LS4-3, 3-LS4-4, 3-LS4-2, 3-ESS2-2; 4-LS1-1, 4-LS1-2; 5-LS1-1, 5-ESS3-1; MS-LS2-1, MS-LS2-4, MS-LS2-5, MS-ESS3-4
