Long Island Science Center Awards Two Scholarships
STEM Scholarships Awarded to Long Island High School Students
At an award ceremony on June 20th, the Long Island Science Center awarded two $1,000 STEM scholarships to high school students Eric Behr and Keiajah Washington. These scholarships will help the recipients further their STEM education as they advance beyond high school.
The first scholarship was a joint endeavor with BNB Bank and was chosen by the Long Island Science Center scholarship committee. The scholarship committee narrowed down applicants from Shoreham-Wading River High School and Riverhead High School, eventually selecting Eric Behr based on his exemplary academic record, his involvement in extracurricular activities, and his interest in pursuing a STEM career. Peter Wanderer, a member of the scholarship committee notes that "The selection committee was very impressed with both the academic and the other achievements of all the applicants. It was very difficult to decide the winner of the scholarship."
The second scholarship was given by a former Long island Science Center board member, Janice Delalio. Based upon a recommendation from Girls Inc., an organization that encourages girls to be leaders, Delalio decided on KeiajahWashington. Washington, who plans on pursuing a career as a Physician's Assistant, will be a first generation college student. Barbara Joy Beatus-Vegh, the Associate Director of Girls Inc. Long Island, emphasizes that "receiving a scholarship is a tremendous opportunity for [Keiajah]."
The Long Island Science Center is committed to encouraging the pursuit of STEM education, as we believe STEM education is necessary for 21st century careers/living.
